It was One Web Day last week....
...the 22nd of September to be precise. Basically - it's a celebration of the internet and users of the WWW are encouraged to show how the internet affects their lives.
Following is an excerpt from an article published in Yes Magazine : -
On September 22, people worldwide participated in the fourth annual celebration of OneWebDay 2009. Through education and activism, a globally distributed network of activists, educators, entrepreneurs, and creatives coordinated their efforts to deliver a simple message: Everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status or where they live, should have access to fast, affordable Internet service and to the skills and tools they need to empower their communities and improve their lives through 21st century communications.

Two questions....
1. Worldwide huh? The only reason I know about it is because I was on the Wikipedia page and they had a link to it. I wonder how many other Africans knew about it?2. Sure!!! The Internet is going to help deliver food to the children that have been displaced by the war in Somalia. Just so long as they have access to the WWW they'll be ok?
How naive are the people that write these things????!!!! Do they know that there's a whole world out there with problems other than, which service provider to use? SURELY they've seen pictures of starving children and their mothers that have to watch as their children slip away into unconciousness?
Yes, access to the WWW IS important and yes, it has made a HUUUUGE change to the way the world "works" but has it really made the world a smaller place?
Seems to me that it's just made the divide between first and third world even bigger.
