Hm, people have time on their hands!
I read this article in The Independent today and all I could think of was, who had the time to do this research! The article's called 'Family rule in Uganda' and is written by the Independent team. It goes on and on about all the positions close to the president that are filled by his relatives. So they quoted lots of academic people and did comparisons with Liberia and Zaire (which, to be honest, read like a textbook) and they probably have valid points (at the time when I wasn't dozing off) but still, who did all the research? Did a group of people forming the Independent team walk into State House and ask for a list of all the jobs in the State House and then went ahead to ask each of them if they are somehow related to the president? What for? To show that we have a dictator? I'm sure there are other obvious indicators. They've just given me a list of eligible men I can pick a husband from by the way, which will ensure that even if it is the president's wife's fourth cousin twice removed, he will have a big job in government or State House and we'll be well off. Thank you Independent. The part I don't get is where business comes in. There is a list of prosperous business people that might be related to the President. Like his brother's sister-in-law. So she has a thriving business because she is somehow remotely related to the president? They tried to justify the 'genuine' people by saying things like, 'Although Karuhanga has made his mark on the business scene through personal hard work, his connections to the first family and the likely benefits it offers have not gone unnoticed.' Just a side note, does anyone know if Karuhanga has a younger brother who is single? Back on track. This Karuhanga, there is no way at all he could have merely achieved his success by mere 'personal hard work'? Really? No way at all? He had to be related to the President? Seriously people, any of you related to Karuhanga and is aspiring to be rich, give me a call.I'm not going to critique the writing style or whatever of the article because I read it laughing the whole way so it might have fulfilled its purpose of assuring us that we are in a dictatorship, it might have been really enlighting to some, and to others it was a show-off of how much academia a paper can quote and deduce. For the rest of us, who had all that time?!!!!
