Bogota Diary 30th September to 2nd October 08
These remaining days have been a blur.. They were so interesting that I couldn't keep up with the diary. Anyway, we had the community site visits. I was in the group that visited Fundacion Cardio Infantil, a hospital that specialises in paediatric heart surgery but provides medical care to all patients.. This is an inspiration for my future health centre! We then headed to Usaquen, which is in old town bogota. Beautiful place with colored buildings and cobblestone streets.. with jewellery sellers lined up on the streets and housing the ultra trendy hacienda mall...Our group had some of the funkiest ladies.. Lina, Paula, Carolina etc... It was a funky group!!I attended a mini-workshop on CV writing and job search.. this was fun and interactive and we were helped to edit our pre-existing CVs. I joined the women and health taskforce and volunteered, with my schoolmates, to edit the section on cervical cancer. It is a module aimed to educate women on cervical cancer to demystify it.I attended another mini-workshop on writing for publication. All the Network sessions are aimed at providing the best for its members and improving the skills that they already have.Another fun workshop was entitled "Cinema and medical education for healthcare providers; from emotions to reflection." A Brazilian university was demonstrating to us how public health is taught through cinema to enable the students relate to the community and helping them realise how they can be more effective in promoting global health. I found it very interesting. Some of the movies featured include; October sky, Pretty woman, Saving Private Ryan, amongst others.
