the tech “unrest” posted on January 31, 2010 - 10:38pm
The information age possess a big challenge today; technology is more or less becoming the driving force of our economies. When I say “technology”, I literally mean the web technologies, mobile technologies, and different gadgets/ hardware platforms. Today I am subscribing to over 10 social networking websites. Now its in my habit to log in for updates and news. While the information I get is important, I must say that “technology is killing me”. Back in the days, all I could do with the internet was read my mail and read just about a few things on the web. Things used to be so simple. With the introduction of social media, web 2.0 (and now web 3.0) the web is becoming rich and richer, more demanding and most importantly, more informative. Now here I am signing in and out of twitter, facebook, ning, skype, yahoo, gmail, wordpress extra. I am not saying that I don’t appreciate the innovations on the web or social media, I do.

Cookie Thief! posted on January 31, 2010 - 10:10pm
It will certainly make you stop and think! I am ashamed to say that this sounds just like something I would do! The woman arrived At an airport one nightWith several long hoursBefore her flight. She hunted for a book In the airport shop,Bought a bag of cookiesAnd found a place to drop. She was engrossed in her bookBut happened to see,That the man sitting beside her,As bold as could be,Grabbed a cookie or twoFrom the bag in between,Which she tried to ignoreTo avoid a scene. So she munched the cookies And watched the clock,As the gutsy cookie thiefDiminished her stock. She was getting more irritated As the minutes ticked by,Thinking, "If I wasn't so nice,I would blacken his eye." With each cookie she took, He took one too,When only one was left,She wondered what he would do.With a smile on his face, And a nervous laugh,He took the last cookieAnd broke it in half. He offered her half, As he ate the other,She snatched it from himAnd thought... ooh, brother!

Once there was a couple in their mid forties walking through abush path and they came across a patch of Mushroom-Husband insisted it wasthe non poisonous one while the wife was adamant this was the lethal stuff. Husband carried on to pick the mushroom and consoled the wife: "What wewill do is we will cook the stuff and feed it to the dog if the dog dies then we throw it away but if the dog is ok then we will also eat it. They got home and fed the mushroom after cooking it to the dog, it was the happiest dog in the village for a full four hours. They then proceeded to eat the mushroom themselves. Just as they finished, their son run into the room and announced in a hurry the death of the dog and he ran out. The two parents looked at each other and tears rolled down their cheeks, the husband then announced:"My wife I should have listened to you, anyway seeing we are going to die I need to rest in peace and make sure I have been honest with you.

I have a wonderful 2010 diary courtesy of ABB Uganda, if I may be allowed to toot their horn. I have used their diaries for the past three years and I do not know how I organised my life before that. Each day comes with an uplifting, noteworthy or funny quote. The above was yesterday’s quote and it really struck a chord with me.
January tends to be a month for whining and complaining on so many levels. First of all we have to spend the long 5 weeks of January paying for the privilege of getting our salaries before Christmas. Only amazingly disciplined people and total Scrooges did not go and blow that money on the festive season.

Not easy to be black - what about blue?! posted on January 31, 2010 - 9:11pm
Last week, when we started our Monday film nights, there was an amazing complaint: some people didn’t feel like watching Americans playing Africans! Well well well, we are eagerly expecting their comments this time as we are taking it much further: on 1 February at 8:30pm at The Gardens you can see Americans actually becoming aliens on an exotic moon called Pandora! We are going to present Avatar, a fantastic film that has already overtaken Titanic as the highest grossing movie ever (and is by the same director, James Cameron). Deep in the unbelievable forests somewhere far far away, you will see colonisers, development workers and a white messiah, blue natives who are (of course) the good guys, plus lots of action and romance. We are showing you our pirate copy only as an appetiser, we advise you to later go to a real cinema, possibly with a 3D projection, and be blown away. Avatar’s world is breath-taking, seriously. Not convinced yet?!

Why the Sexual Network May Never be Stopped posted on January 31, 2010 - 6:50pm

In my last post, I was bothered about the fact that men keep lying to me. I am over that because I realised that they have to lie with the hope of getting what they want from me. Luckily, none has succeeded so far. This perpetual lying by men is the reason why I think the ‘get out of the sexual network’ strategy or ‘be faithful to your sexual partner’ is a lost cause. The truth of the matter is if you read the minds of most married men you would find that most of them wish for opportunities to have sex all the time not only with their wives but with other women. Of course no man will admit this to his wife because that would be asking for trouble. Why ask for a fight when you can avoid it?Given the chance, most married men would have an affair with different women if they were sure they would never be caught. A few daring ones make it a point to have an affair as often as they want to regardless of whether they will be caught by their wives or not.

Thoughtful, gay, Ugandan posted on January 31, 2010 - 6:23pm

One way that we as gay people manage to fight on is being what we are.

And also marshalling our passions, our talents, to the fight for equality. We are not fighting for any 'rights'. That is a misnomer, which our enemies- and, many are truly that, enemies- many of them use the term 'rights' to say we are asking for something more.

We fight, we petition, we agitate for one thing only. To be equal to other human beings.

We ask the state and states to consider what we are, to be on par with others as human beings. We demand that, in matters of state, we are equal, not a minority that is persecuted where the others are given advantages over us in all realms of life and living. We know we are different. We assert that, though different, we are equal. Human beings.

It is better than Iran, at the moment. There, 346 Iranians were executed for being gay in 2008 alone. Better than Iran, which many Ugandans see as a bad thing. We also want to kill our homos. Period.

Robbery Report: Kampala Taxi Passengers Getting Robbed posted on January 31, 2010 - 6:16pm

Hello, tout le monde.Smelling The Coffee has told us, in this post, Taxi scam, of a new and growing trend in Kampala. Wake up and smell the coffee, as it were.In short, a taxi stops and picks you up.You are given the front seat, next to another passenger. The car drives on for a while, then your front door flies open. The conductor (behind you) struggles to get it shut, and fails. You try to shut it and fail. The passenger next to you asks to hold your bag while you work the door. You hand over your bag.You try to shut the door, and still you fail.So the driver stops for the conductor to take a look at it.You're told to step out, so the conductor can assume your advantaged position in dealing with the door. The door shuts. The taxi vrooms away.

Advice for New Missionaries posted on January 31, 2010 - 3:47pm

This morning's sermon from Acts 21 compared the advice given to Paul as he came to the Jerusalem church to that the Babwisi would like to give new missionaries.  In the Bible, there is tension between the ancient culture of Judaism from which the first believers are emerging, and the question of how much of that culture should be part of non-Jewish Christian practice, and which pagan rituals are acceptable or unacceptable for Christians.  It is fascinating to consider these cross-cultural issues which arose from the very beginning, and to see that most of the direct written-in-Scripture commands of the new Kingdom are heart-level principles about love and humility and service and obedience and holiness . . with the specific application to various cultures left to councils and consensus of leaders.

Laced with pain posted on January 31, 2010 - 2:59pm

Funny, huh? What started as an exciting month could not have had a better anticlimax. God, you know what I mean. There are so many things I want to know. What is love? I thought I knew it but maybe I do not anymore. I have a utopian curse. That sickness which makes one believe in the impossible. My hope is really senseless- a zealot without a mind; you have too much faith in good. And what is pain? Why can't I just throw it away? It puts me in a strong grapple and never wants to let go till I give in and give of the dew of my heart.I want to know. I want to understand. That night I walked away, I knew something was not right. I walked that upward winding road alone, with thoughts raining like cats and dogs in my mind. I often looked up at the dark night, the moon...was it present? I forget. I was not in a hurry, I just walked. One or two boda bodas stopped to ask if I was going and I said no. They continued on their way.

Contrast in Uganda posted on January 31, 2010 - 11:43am

Uganda is beautiful country.Very, very beautiful. So beautiful that it is very easy to forget that it can also be ugly. Very ugly.
Yesterday I was out dancing, having fun, in a bar with other people.I had fun. The music was good, the mind was easy, and I was wild with relief that I am alive. I was happy, I felt it, and did show it.
Yet, I am immersed in the middle of a battle for my life. My very life, me and my partner’s. And of all Ugandans that are like me.
Now I am seated in a corner of our compound, typing away, thinking of the contrasts, the extremes that my life is.And, there  are deadly caveats to the beauty, ugliness that I have to ignore most of the time. Because I can go mad if I obsess about some of those things.
How can I be a gay Ugandan and be happy, living in Uganda?
I have to shut my eyes to some of the things that happen.
Yesterday, I did have a conversation with a couple of people who are questioning their sexuality.I am gay, and I know it.

Uganda’s non Coffee Drinking Culture posted on January 31, 2010 - 5:54am
According to Apollo Kamugisha, the principal development officer of Uganda Coffee Development Authority, Uganda is the lead producer of high quality Robusta beans in the world. Indigenous to Uganda and the Congo, Robusta coffee is grown at high altitude in volcanic soil and wet climates. Uganda exported about 2.7 million bags of coffee worth US$257 million in 2007, which was about $87 million more than the previous year (2006). When we were growing up during the Amin’s regime, coffee was fetching 10 times as much. If I remember right Uganda was officially exporting around 1.5 million bags of coffee per year and earning over US $ 1.5billion! Note that nearly twice the production now is earning the country one sixth of what half the production was earning 30 years ago. No wonder that time, there was coffee smuggling. Peasants in Busoga and other eastern Uganda districts used to smuggle coffee to Kenya and earn millions of shillings.

It is believed that fgor one to get riches, human sacrifice is a requirement. It is now common in Uganda for parents and/or relatives to abduct children including their own to be used by witchdoctors to create wealth. Children are known to go missing on the way from or to school or a well. Sometimes, their remains are found without a head, breasts, tongue and or private parts. Almost all the cases of child sacrifice have revolved around witchcraft. The child sacrifices were carried out by witchdoctors or by their clients who have been advised or ordered to do so by witchdoctors, traditional healers, astrologists, traditional medicine men or cult leaders.

The Origin of ‘God’ and ‘Religion’ posted on January 30, 2010 - 11:38pm
It feels good to be certain about something. Certainty is comfortable, and uncertainty is not. It is uncomfortable ‘not to know’. This is the result of us having evolved a brain which interprets the world by seeking patterns and trying to infer causes from observable effects. To create a sensible world in which there are answers to all questions, in the cases where answers were not immediately forthcoming, we as a species have often opted to invent them. So what is ‘God’? ‘God’ is one such invented answer. It is simply a word people use to symbolise whatever they think might be responsible for things we haven’t figured out yet.

I've heard many beautiful stuff from really talented people like Maxwell, Tamia, Brandy, etc but this song, wow, I wish I was the one who had written it- coz I don't know if I'm yet ready to write this well or even better.I'm trying to be as honest as I can in this post but I am afraid. Afraid that maybe you will see that I too am human. I like to think of myself as having a highly developed sense of morality; I believe that the only person I have power over is myself. Of late I find myself battling with questions of morality, truth, liberty, justice and peace as well as metaphysical questions of being. I struggle to understand why certain things happen as they do what they mean in the grand scheme of things and if I have the power to change anything. I like to call this process "reinventing myself" and it involves an analysis of life as I perceive it, that which is written and speculation as regards a future sense of fulfilment. I have done this twice before in my life; first, I lost religion and then the romantic fantasy that is always shattered by unrequited love. This is my third attempt to make sense of life as I know it and the world I live in with more than six billion other people. I do not know if I will survive or if I want to. I begin to suspect that reality does indeed bite.

She can hardly stand it!!!Ahhhh, hers at last :)Of course a girl has to give "her" rabbit a ride in her strollerAnd read him a book...And give him rides in the sand truckAnd swing on the horse tire swing...Hmmm, think she's a little proud?Heck, we just like to LOOK at our bunny!Frank is a GENTLE soul, especially for a two year old. So what if you have a little trouble navigating the stairs? Its not like youve forgotten how to walk. Its really not that bad you know. It really isnt. You are quite capable of going to the bathroom by yourself. You have been doing it for years. and nothing has really changed except for the fact that yo have a stupid cast on your leg and a pair of crutches to keep you company. but you can handle that. Youve dealt with alot worse. Remember that summer when your foot got crushed by an SUV? But inspite of your best arguments your mother insists that if she let you go by yourself she will only worry. and she's tired of worrying. She's done enough worrying to last her a lifetime. And so letting out an exasperated sigh you let your mother act as your personal escort. Talk about a lack of privacy.

And today, I remembered that I had lots of news to work through. Lots of it.

That great article from Dr Semugoma, I mentioned it yesterday. Was kind of too sleep drunk to take it in. But, it is a good one. I withdraw my envy of the guy..., NOT! Ha ha ha.

CHILDREN Shall be CHILDREN posted on January 30, 2010 - 2:37am
To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or students...here is something to make you chuckle. Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to His own children. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was "DON'T!" "Don't what?" Adam replied. "Don't eat the forbidden fruit." God said. "Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve..we have forbidden fruit!" "No Way!" "Yes way!" "Do NOT eat the fruit! "said God. "Why?""Because I am your Father and I said so!" God replied, wondering why He hadn't stopped creation after making the elephants. A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break and He was ticked! "Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?" God asked. "Uh huh," Adam replied. "Then why did you?" said the Father. "I don't know," said Eve. "She started it!" Adam said.

The little girl who was a rape victim picked her assailant out of a group, which must have been a horrible experience for her.  The police made her do so separately from her mom.  And the first group they paraded did not include the accused.  But she's a tough little six year old, and she told them he was not there, then pointed him out in the second group.  The mom also made an ID separately.  And I spent another afternoon filling out police reports in triplicate and driving them with Heidi all back up to the station to be sure the file was complete.  So, it seems we have the right man arrested. As ambivalent as I was, the mom's relief and triumph in the apprehension made me glad we kept persisting in the quest for justice.  Now we just have to keep advocating for his conviction, for his removal from the community where he has done such evil.  As well as the second case, the one from this weekend, involving a different man and a 12 year old girl.

But, the sun is out and I have to go do some work. Really need to sleep. [Don’t dare ask what I was doing last night. Will be rude to you.]
This morning, I looked at a brother of mine and took the plunge. Went to him, opened with the famous line-
‘You do know that I am gay?’
Great hitting the nail on the head.He looked away, didn’t know what to say, prevaricated. I found I was getting too nervous, so I explained. He has seen me living at my place with my man all these years. He must have suspected. And, I was just confirming it.
He was still not very communicative. Maybe he was speechless. I was forced to continue.
There was this bill in the Parliament. It aimed to imprison, kill us. I am fighting the bill, and soon rather than later, I am going to be comprehensively outed. There was lots of misinformation, that we were rapists, evil, etc. But, that wasn’t true.

Buganda Post On Both Twitter and Facebook posted on January 29, 2010 - 8:27am
A few months ago, Buganda Post was the victim of unknown electronic hooligans, who hacked and corrupted our databases (see  “Buganda Post Hacked By Unknown Hooligans” and “NRM Might Be Behind The Attacks On Baganda Web News Outlets“). We still do not know who did it and why but we notice that the same or similar cyber thugs are still attempting to hijack Buganda Post. To get a long-term solution to the above problem, the Buganda Post website is undergoing a full redesign.  We expect to launch the redesigned Buganda Post site by March 2010. The redesigned Buganda Post will be more professionally laid out and with better opportunities for Buganda citizens and others interested in the kingdom to exchange information and ideas.  We are doing our best to make sure to keep the familiar, simple look and color scheme of Buganda Post , even as we add more features.
