One Decade posted on December 31, 2009 - 11:35pm
With approximately one hour and thirty minutes I sit here to chronicle this. But before I write much I should say that this article is inspired by another man’s. I rarely write the details of my life for the simple fact that I find them less important than the lessons that they present to me, so I concentrate on the lessons. Today however I find myself inspired by a better man, Isaac Tibasiima. And this one posting is mostly dedicated to him; I pray I do the art and the ministry, the justice due.
The Gulu Internet experience posted on December 31, 2009 - 11:27pm
While in Gulu I was directed to their newest and best Internet café in town. I visited them and asked for an hour of Internet use. An hour costs shs 1,500/- (50 Euro cent equivalent!). I was allocated a place and I tried to log on my Yahoo. It was possible to establish how much time each action took by looking at the remaining time of my allocation. It took me 15 minutes to open yahoo, another 15 minutes to log on and 10 minutes to open my first email! I complained to the supervisor and he added me 30 minutes. Out of the 200 emails in my inbox, I was able to read not more than 10. I paid for an extra hour, but the exercise was so painful that I decided to abandon the money and go to bed instead. The next day I visited the café at try again early in the morning. It was a bit faster, but the electricity was so unreliable. It kept going off and there was no back up. I asked them why they didn’t use a generator and they explained that they owned one, but it was too expensive to run.
Uhuru Pilau sucks posted on December 31, 2009 - 11:10pm
When I returned from Gulu yesterday, I went straight to my friend Sam Ntende’s office. I found Sam who usually attires in formal clothing relaxed at his office. He is an attorney. It was late afternoon and we were all hungry. He asked me if I wanted to eat and I asked to be taken to Uhuru’s restaurant to eat his famous pilau. Pilau is spiced up rice usually with fried meat. I had read so much about Uhuru restaurant and the pilau. Reports said it had nice pilau, chapati (flat bread) and fresh juice are his trademark servings. And that should one have such a meal from Uhuru, you can be sure to be full for the rest of the day and no need for supper. It is a nice way to save for most folks. The restaurant is near Standard Chartered Bank down town. Price is about 3,500/-. (One euro) Given the price it is not easy to get where to sit. It took us about 5 minutes to walk from Sam’s office to the restaurant. It is somewhere upstairs surrounded by shops.

What is an atheist? posted on December 31, 2009 - 8:51pm
by Hotem Dajenid31 December 2009I often hear this from religious people: "If they don't believe in God, then are they capable of believing in anything? If so, what do they believe in? Is atheism a religion? Perhaps an ideology of some sort."Wikipedia states "The term atheism originated from the Greek ???? (atheos), meaning 'without gods', which was applied with a negative connotation to those thought to reject the gods worshiped by the larger society." But there's an equally valid way to explain atheism: The simplest way would be to say a- (not) theist (from the Greek theos or god). I have never believed in any religion, so sometimes I find it difficult to understand Christian thinking. But it seems that many Christians think that an atheist worships devils. This is not true. No matter what one wishes to believe, there are, in fact, no devils, angels, heaven, celestial virgins, gods, spirits, souls, or hell. All of these are mere figments of the unscientific imagination.

Someone read this blog post and was concerned. He was worried that I had my references wrong. That Bahati and Ssempa didnt lie.

This is what the guy wrote;

I just read your latest blog post in which you make reference to the penal code.Question: Which penal code are you referring to? The one I have says:129. Defilement of girl under the age of eighteen.(1) Any person who unlawfully has sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of eighteen years commits an offence and is liable to suffer death.(2) Any person who attempts to have unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of eighteen years commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for eighteen years, with or without corporal punishment. In this version it explicitly refers to girls below eighteen. Is the version of the penal code that I have an old one? Have a look the full pdf attached.

I had a glorious Christmas and 2010 promises more gloriously fabulous things. But now I want to expatiate on the year that climaxes tonight and as well ruminate on what Andy Serwer called "the decade from hell." This year tested my mettle probably like no other year. It began with the dolorous news of grandma's passing. That's the lady that taught me to grow up, and she was gone before I could look her in the eye and voice my eternal gratefulness. But my soul rests in the conviction that in heaven we shall meet again and part no more.
A Long post to Wind Up the Year 2009 posted on December 31, 2009 - 12:20pm

It is the very last day of the year.

Must say the day is cool. Cold. I don’t remember an end of year with so much rain. Overcast, grey skies, cool in Uganda means 16C. Told you this is a beautiful country, with beautiful weather. I know, some people are suffering with freezing weather. And, they would believe this is summer if it was this hot….!

[Cheeky grin]. I love this country. For its good weather, its beauty, for all the pleasures of being, even when it is tough. I know, many people don’t understand something like that. Being content, feeling good when I should feel bad. Why do I?

Life is a dream. One day, we shall wake up. For the moment, let me dream on.

Yesterday was a day of thought. Not about any new year resolutions. Don’t usually do those. But, the red rug article.
I noticed a few things, like the change of focus from ‘foreign promoters’, to in-house promoters. Of a sudden, we promoters of homosexuality have become rich, ‘city tycoons’….

The belief which I espouse in creed finally is concretised, the apostolic succession is now complete. I am overjoyed by this gesture from the pontificate and it's absolutely welcome. In celebration we rented a golf cart at the zoo so that Prossy could have a bit of fun driving around. Being as her grandparents never got her a lawn tractor when she was four and she's never driven a real, big tractor (pulling a disk I might add, when you're only four!) a little golf cart was perfect to start out in. And boy did we have fun! It was a perfect lovely day and we didn't run over any tourists or children Smile. The jolly crew!

A lifeline crop for the Banyakigezi, (irish) potato was both a staple food and a main household income source throughout the Kigezi Highlands. Unfortunately, the crop has been decimated by pests and diseases, particularly bacterial wilt and late blight. Where as research shows that potato can yield over 30mt/hectare, yields in the Kigezi highlands range between 4-7 mt/ha. Latest estimates show production declining even further per unit of cultivated land to the extent that most farmers have abandoned their lifeline crop.
Government Defends need to legislate on Homosexuality posted on December 30, 2009 - 2:24pm

As to the content of the Bill, he said the Government was aware that the Penal Code already provides against homosexuality.

It may, therefore, not be necessary to have another law to further criminalise it.” He, however, added that there is a need to protect minors against homosexual relations “as we have already done with a law to protect minors against defilement in heterosexual relations.

Kutesa further pointed out that the Government does not support the promotion of homosexuality just like it cannot promote prostitution.

“It is a fact that if there are any homosexuals in Uganda, they are a minority. The majority of Africans, and indeed Ugandans, abhor this practice. It is, therefore, not correct to allow this minority to provoke the majority by promoting homosexuality,” the statement read.

Woke up feeling good, with my lover in my hands. It is a wonderful thing, this thing we call love.
No, I don’t plan that this ecstasy is denied me. Not in any way. Not by the law, not by the constitution, not by anyone. I am a simple, normal human being, and love is my right. One of those simple human rights…!

Inalienable rights of human beings. Please laugh with me….

Gay marriage posted on December 29, 2009 - 11:42pm

Why do gay people want to get married?

Because we are human beings. Because we do fall in love. Because it is not just about sex, though [sex is good]. It is about our humanness.
No, we dont want to upset the people who sincerely believe that we are a threat to them. We dont want to make them unhappy. Indeed, for most of us, we cannot fathom how a commitment to love one another, between two consenting adult human beings is so upsetting that we need to be arrested because we did so. Get married, that is.

I reported on the gay wedding ceremony in Uganda here. It was not the first. Indeed, less than 2 months ago, there was another one. We are human beings, and we crave recognition by our communities that we fall in love. Imagine, those guys in Uganda, they risked all and had their ceremony. And, if the Anti-Homosexuality bill becomes law, they would be risking life imprisonment.

A couple in Malawi made the news. From what I gather, they had an engagement ceremony of sorts.

People of Uganda,
We were all warned by the powers that be, that they are going to be deploying snakes to disperse crowds!  Surely hope that was just a threat and they have not lived up to the promise. In a place like Uganda where lab to physician communication could sometime take days and not minutes and [...]

This I got from no authority other than Dr Sylvia Tamale. You remember, she wrote and gave this speech at the Dialogue.

It is not true that the Penal Code provision on "Aggravated Defilement" does not cover abused boys.  S. 129(3) clearly says: "Any person who performs a sexual act with another person who is below the age of eighteen years... commits a felony called aggravated defilement".  It does not limit it to girls.
Where do I catch out Ssempa and Bahati lying about that? Here we go.

Almere 2009 – 2018: shifting towards a cultural city posted on December 29, 2009 - 1:37pm
Migration and, more specifically, the challenges of social cohesion are some of the more important issues facing 'new town' Almere. Almere, which is a great example of 70's utopianism, is shifting from an adolescent to a more mature and fully grown city. Like many young European cities, Almere is looking for its cultural identity. This 'new town', created from scratch by engineers and administrators, is still 'developing' its softer, more cultured side. This project (Almere 2018) outlines briefly matters that needed to be addressed and includes ideas and genuine changes for creating culture in new towns. It describes both its recent and archeological history. An account is also given of the Seven Almere Principles which serve as guidelines for the development of a sustainable city of the future. William McDonough, ‘the famous Cradle to Cradle architect’, was flown into Almere in the spring of 2008 for the purpose of helping out on the sustainability side of things.

Indeed, the country is in the grips of a gay panic. First, for your information, Ssempa wants a 3 million people march on Kampala. The aim, to support this bill. Here is the text of the bill.

And, where did Ssempa plan that Million People March on Kampala? Here are his words.

Ssempa: …meat, can be another man’s poison. So they want us to eat their poison of homosexuality, we are saying no. So, we want people to show how they feel because I don’t know how they underst… so, on January 19, there’s been a task force that met, of religious leaders, and we realise it’s Christmas time, but we have to send a message, a strong message out, and we did yesterday, thanks for the coverage, but there was an agreement, people were saying, ‘no!
