Nocturnal posted on May 31, 2009 - 9:36pm

Last night I watched Nocturnal perform live and if I could write better I would describe to you just how awesome it is. If I had known that there was a band with the pedigree that Nocturnal displayed last night, my faith in the Ugandan music industry would have been restored ages ago. This is how it went down.

Last month at the Maurice Kirya Experience I saw Edmund Begumisa play for the first time and I fell in love. Edmund plays like he is making love to her woman, not just any woman but the woman he loves. I was so smitten I couldn’t wait to see him play again but I found out it wasn’t a regular deal. Anyway just when I had lost hope of ever hearing him play again, I got an SMS on Saturday “NOCTURNAL, the original Ugandan Blues-Rock band performing LIVE @ Iguana, Kisementi 9pm.” I read that message and just screamed I was so excited.

9pm found us at Iguana but UMEME had other ideas.

It looked an evening of great promise. As a fresher, I had always craved for the first time when I would “hang out” with one of our own—the much craved for university girls, whose reputation I had met months before I went to the Ivory Tower.Having sat for my A-level in a typical village school deep in Bugisu, my impressions about university girls had largely been formed by stories that the few boys from Namabasa, who had been to Makerere, narrated whenever they came back for holidays. One boy in particular, Wandwasi, told us of girls whose skimpy attire had caught the eye of the “big people” in the city that the wealthiest of men came to set camp at the campus just to have a look at these marvels of creation.

My mind was far away, in that place where dreams are made and magic is real; even for twenty year olds. It’s rare that I dream, or rather that I remember the little abstract titbits that float in and out of my subconscious but this was one of those days.

Having spent a cumulative 3 to 4 hours at the police post in the last 24 . . . I've had some time to observe and reflect.  My purpose for being there was to support our younger missionaries and national staff friends as they filed their testimonies in regards to the two house break-ins in May.  The first day we were met by a tall thin older man who was teasing and brusque and craftily bordering on hostile.

Displaced numbers rise with new LRA attacks posted on May 30, 2009 - 1:56pm
Fresh attacks by Ugandan rebels in northeast Democratic Republic of Congo have displaced more than 12,000 civilians, according to aid officials. “The Lord’s Resistance Army burned a dozen houses, stole sheeting provided by aid workers, as well as clothes. They even kidnapped some people,” said Aroon Sambia, head of civil society in Dungu territory. “After these repeated attacks, aid workers distributed plastic sheeting, soap and high-energy biscuits to about 50 displaced households who sought refuge in Dungu’s Bamokandi district,” said Nestor Yombo of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). He added that about a third of this fresh wave of displaced people (IDPs) returned home after the army was deployed in the area. Even before the latest LRA attack, on 24 May, about 100,000 people were sleeping in the open in Dungu because of a lack of sheeting, according to Sambia.

I haven’t spoken to, hugged, played with, disagreed with, made noise with, tickled… all the mom-son lovey dovey stuff with my boy for 36 hours!
I last had any interaction with him on Thurday evening at 11pm. I left him enjoying sleep on Friday morning and got back home at 3am on Saturday morning, leaving him at 8am once again enjoying sleep. Imagine!
I miss my baby… I have to get home early today.
In other news, my delicious black evening bag was stolen at the Sheraton last night. Imagine! We were at a friend’s wedding and some person snatched it off the table while we were boogying away. Two phones stolen in just over 1 year! The thing that hurt was that that bag was a gift from a close friend and I treasured it.
But I guess bibawo…

Members of Parliament get graded posted on May 29, 2009 - 6:40pm
African Leadership Institute, a Ugandan think tank, made news yesterday when it released grades for each member of parliament. The Institute's system rates Uganda's Members of Parliament on attendance and performance. The grades are a positive step towards elevating the expectations that constituents have for their MPs, whose standards are still quite low. "I have DStv, my people watch football free, I provide newspapers throughout the year," he said. "I think [the scorecards are] good, it encourages us to do better." Here are three bits of news gathered from the wide, wide web. I see a relationship among them. Do you? ONEA recent study commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce shows how the corporate world views Africa. From Foreign Policy:

My next piece is up at Global Voices Online:Uganda's Internet penetration rate is a little over six percent, a number that prevents large swaths of the population from joining Uganda's blogren or accessing the global blogosphere. For one village, the Guardian and Observer's Katine Project is working to change that.Since October 2007, the Katine Project has tracked the impact of a dedicated £2.5 million ($4 million) AMREF development project in Katine, a rural sub-county in northeastern Uganda (virtual tour). In addition to providing general news about Uganda and tracking developments in five key project areas, the project has been training local residents to use video cameras to document their lives.Read more »

It’s time to say good bye to internet for a while. We are moving office tomorrow. This is when I wish I had a laptop for our Hot spot. Our old computers rely on the local network to get it. I am not worried about what will happen to books and files and what not because there are no shelves and filing cabinets in the new office. I do not care that next week is graduation and I won’t be able to print transcripts. All that saddens me right now is that I will no longer be able to blog. We are all going to sit in one room with Boss A and B and everyone else. This is when I wish I could elope with someone to London and make babies. Not that it’s the best place to be right now but I imagine since my UK visa expires in September, I could still go. I don’t know.
