You may have noticed that things have sort of slowed down here, and if you are wondering what is going on, well it's life actually. There is just too much going on for me to pay attention to this blog right now. I would tell you what exactly is keeping me so busy lately but that is not what this blog is really about; just trust that is all socially constructive. Mostly. You can still poke around the site and look through the Archives while I am away. And if you happen to wander off somewhere else, well, that is fine too. You'll be back. I hope.

It isn't easy to avoid smoking if you've been doing it for a while. It's easy to quit but challenging to not start again. Anyone can avoid doing something once, especially if they've got something to prove, or something to gain. The thing is, and you try to convince yourself otherwise when you haven't had a cigarette in a while, that you can't smoke only one. A cigarette isn't a singular thing. To smoke one is to smoke many. When you smoke one, you smoke whole packs, cartons, generations. Every puff is a precursor to a hundred nicotine holocausts. There are, surely, biochemical explanations for why this may be the case, but I don't intend to invoke them. I don't think the mechanistic explanation does much to convey the counterintuitive nature of the thing.

Unfortunately it happened to be one of the oldest- with torn seats that exagerated the effect of your weight by sagging alittle too much making you think once again, " I need to do some jogging!" Thing is the number plate was UAG 666T-so why the aged appearance? Aside from the all the groans and squeals the taxi made at every bump, hump or ditch, our ears were further assaulted by the sterio of what the driver thought was a boom box!

Let Us Talk Land posted on February 20, 2008 - 9:13pm
By Kirenga Steven Mugabe My Political Education teacher used to say that when a concern for the proper governance for society does not come naturally, then it is better to pretend. I wonder what he would say about the current land debate. If nothing else, it has been a controversial one. Not since Gaetano’s escapades in the Big Brother Africa One competition has the city been this excited. And understandably so. Emotions are easily stirred whenever land ownership is discussed. This seems to be true even for those who do not actually own any land. Much has been said about the government's handling of this matter but it is necessary, for the sake of clarity, reiterate some of the concerns that this bill is meant to address.

My excitement caused the husband to walk for about 3 hours in search of his new bride's craving and when he returned the atmosphere was ripe with anticipation. We settled down to a special dinner, got special glasses and poured the drink like sophisticated wine tasters- you know these things.

It is already annoying that I am a slow reader and have poor concentration hence my uncunning ability to read only two pages before I get distracted. I am as such really frustrated that I cannot finish the book and find out how it ends quickly.

… and I am a Kampala city desk jockey with a moderate middle-class income. I live alone, a quiet, sub-ordinary life between the cigarettes I smoke to get me to sleep at night and the coffee I drink to keep me awake by day. I hate my job, but I have learnt to tolerate my workmates and I don't go to the bar when the day is done because I get too tired. My life has ground, over the years, down to a monotonous routine. Every day as grey and endless and devoid as the last. It seems that, like the tragic pawn in a horrible movie, I am trapped in endless rehash of the exact same day that I have to live over and over again. The only difference is every morning I launch into this day a little bit older. My life is being wasted right before my eyes. And to make it worse, I can't find the energy for outrage.

It has happened again. The tragic shooting at Northern Illinois University is yet another instance of gun violence on an American university campus and the second this month alone. On February 8th a nursing student at Louisiana Technical College shot two students before turning the gun on herself, and in April last year 33 people were killed by a student at Virginia Tech University. It will be a few days before we know where this latest shooting fits in the spectrum of American tragedies but it is safe to assume that it will reignite America's debate on gun control, which has surprisingly not come up very often in the on-going presidential primaries.
GOVERNMENT TAKES BACK SEAT AS UNEMPLOYMENT LEVELS RISE posted on February 14, 2008 - 4:23pm

By Mutabazi Sam StewartOn the eve of the New Year in 1991, President Yoweri Museveni addressed the nation on television and radio where he announced his government’s decision to fully liberalize the economy. The New Year 2002 therefore saw a complete shift from a market largely driven by the state to one that is controlled by private individuals and groups. The Structural Adjustment Policies (SAPs) were to follow later with a full backing of International Monitory Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Privatization of all state enterprises was started in earnest and massive retrenchment was effected.

ONE OF THESE DAYS KAMPALA WILL GROUND TO A HALT posted on February 14, 2008 - 4:21pm

By Mutabazi Sam StewartMany cities in Africa face the problem of over crowding but Kampala’s traffic jam is undoubtedly getting out of hand. The situation is likely to get even worse because our planners and engineers are either sleeping or they think that the problem will solve itself in the long run. The most crowded city in terms of vehicles and human traffic in Africa is Lagos, the former capital city of Nigeria, with a vehicle population of over three million. Lagos is however more than ten times the size of Kampala. In 1992 Uganda had 120,000 vehicles. In 2004, the number of registered vehicles had jumped to 465,574. By the end of last year the total number of registered vehicles was almost reaching 600,000. Of these 80% are based in Kampala and the surrounding areas. In March 2006, a total of 2,555 vehicles were registered, the highest that year. The average vehicles being licensed currently is about 2,300 every month and 100 every day.

I've been very resistant to seeing Atonement, which is I think based upon a novel by Ian McEwan (the book, that is). Here are the reasons.1. The leads are Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, or so it seems, and frankly I'm tired of actors being promoted for looking like models. Upon reflection, it occurs to me that this is if anything a flaw in the system of film-making, a structural problem rather than a quality unique to this film. I'm not interested in the implications of that truth, however.2. As an American, I'm congenitally uninterested in the byzantine hierarchies endemic to British culture, and the inevitable havoc wrought unmercifully on the lives of those whose fate is mangled in the violent congress of circumstance and fortune in those milieux. Unless it's done well.3. Movies set during world war two: clearly, there are too many of them. Far too many. It's a threat to everything we hold dear!

Citizen Uganda projected to win California and New York posted on February 11, 2008 - 8:31am
In the past some pundits have claimed that Citizen Uganda is just a flash in the pan, but now we know that is not true. According to the latest poll by Google Analytics, Citizen Uganda is projected to win California and New York, and might still pull out wins in Alabama, Massachusetts, Texas and Virginia. These wins in big states are significant and most analysts believe that CU's campaign will be see an injection of funds following such a strong showing in these significant states. With that capital, CU will be capable of mounting a serious challenge to the established blogs. The pundits now feel that the race is too close to call. With more states due to vote in the coming weeks it is possible that this will go down to the wire.

Every hang out is polluted, trust me. Then I also whisked myself away, out of town to Jinja and Mbarara.I know the Bahamas sounds more thrilling but guys, a gal has got to go where she has got to go.

THE TOWER - I really must get around to posting the third and last part in the back-in-time series otherwise the first two will get all mouldy. Soon, I hope. A certain story recently caught my eye in Bukedde, the Luganda-language tabloid published by the New Vision, about a Ugandan Muslim pilgrim accused of theft during the Mecca -- in Saudi Arabia. Now, compared to murder, kidnap, arson, terrorism, etc, theft might seem as easy as taking candy from a child (although, technically speaking, you could be charged with robbery or aggravated robbery if you threaten or use a weapon to do so). Not in Saudi Arabia, which practices Sharia (Islamic) law.

The Kampalan: What do we need from this blog? posted on February 6, 2008 - 10:50pm
The polls are closed and the votes are in. No, I am not talking about Super Tuesday. I am talking about a poll on the future of The Kampalan, a fledgling Ugandan blog written by a group of contributors. The voting has been going on for about a month following a brief debate about the future of this blog. The Kampalan has been struggling through some challenges since its inception. The blog was supposed to reflect the character of the city. But that has not really happened. In spite of having a great collection of well-read bloggers few have bothered to post consistently on the blog, and when they have done so, most of what they have to say has little to do with the city itself.

So many years waiting, so many breaths held, so much anticipation… we’ve all been waiting for Elemental Edge Version 2.0. Yup, me too.
Sorry to dissappoint guys, but the most logical thing was to make it a blog. Pretty neat looking one though.
Why a blog?
1. It allows me to update the site really fast.
2. I can post a lot more stuff than if it was just a site.
3. It falls within the new Elemental Edge, a personal experiment and exploration of creativity, passion and commitment to the pursual of excellence. And lastly,
4. It expands on and aids the spirit of sharing, nurturing and mentoring talent which has always been at the heart of the Edge.
So as we wait for something really fancy… which might never come, except as stand alone projects, for now, enjoy the new Elemental Edge.

So I switched jobs. The last boat had become a little shaky so I needed to bail. Unfortunately, this also meant as soon as this new company offered me a life-line, I took it. The point of switching jobs is usually to get more money. I didn't get that. That said, working here - does have its perks. For one, I get a more decent-looking wardrobe. I could have done that anyway, but somehow, I felt I needed an excuse. Then, not being in an entirely IT-centric firm means people generally don't expect too much from you. Tasks I could fix in my sleep make jaws drop. How can i forget delegation? I get to reassign tasks i'm assigned! How cool is that? There's always the change of scenery. And the promise of travel, which management felt was a pretty good motivational factor to get people to sign contracts. We did.

To cheer myself up, I put on one of my favourite suits (doesn't matter that it was blue and i was actually feeling blue) and one of my nicest pair of shoes..... I picked up my lappy (as in laptop) and bag and off to the office I went with my bravest face on!The day went ok until I felt so kind as to tell my driving companion not to pick me up at the end of the day. You see I was feeling kind- didnt want him to drive back into town to pick me when I could stroll down to the park, pick a taxi and meet him out of town. Ofcourse he was thrilled with my sensitivity and I was the more- my day was certainly way up there!
